Background of the Study
Interprofessional education (IPE) is an instructional approach that promotes collaboration among healthcare professionals by allowing students from different disciplines to learn together, fostering teamwork and improved patient care (World Health Organization [WHO], 2023). The growing complexity of healthcare systems demands a multidisciplinary approach where nurses, doctors, pharmacists, and other healthcare providers work cohesively to improve patient outcomes (Ogunleye & Adewale, 2024).
In Nigeria, nursing education has traditionally followed a siloed approach, where students are trained within their professional disciplines with minimal interaction with other healthcare students. This separation can lead to communication gaps, role confusion, and ineffective teamwork in clinical practice (Chinwe & Hassan, 2023). The University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital (UPTH) has made efforts to integrate IPE into its nursing training, but challenges such as inadequate curriculum design, lack of institutional support, and resistance to interdisciplinary learning persist (Okafor et al., 2024). This study appraises the importance of IPE in nursing training at UPTH and its impact on teamwork, communication, and patient safety.
Statement of the Problem
The effectiveness of healthcare delivery relies on a well-coordinated team where nurses, physicians, and other healthcare professionals collaborate seamlessly. However, many nursing graduates enter the workforce with limited interprofessional collaboration skills due to the absence of IPE in their training (Williams et al., 2024). This results in workplace conflicts, communication breakdowns, and suboptimal patient outcomes.
At UPTH, efforts to integrate IPE remain underdeveloped, with limited structured programs for interdisciplinary collaboration among students. The lack of IPE initiatives poses a challenge in preparing nursing students for real-world healthcare environments. This study seeks to evaluate the significance of IPE in nursing training and identify strategies for its effective integration.
